I’ve been keeping journals since I was 6 years old and I still have most of them with me today. I remember sitting in my closet as a very young child (a place of stillness where I could think) “drawing” the thoughts and images from my head what I was thinking and doing and then knowing I needed to mention that I was thinking it and that I was thinking needing to mention that I was thinking etc. And sometimes I would sort of get trapped in the cycle, like that awful song that goes around and around or like a night when you can’t think and your thoughts go in circles, thinking “he thought, he thought, he thought….” and not being able to get out of having to draw every one. I didn’t quite realize yet that you don’t have to put *everything* in to tell the truth, or if I did, I knew that thinking like that was part of the essentials of the situation I was sketching and completely necessary for plot development. Say that ten times fast!

I was that sort of child.

The Sketch Diaries is an ongoing project that will last a year and is officially started on my birthday, August 5th of 2008. While I don’t plan each and every sketch that I do each day, these particular sketches are specifically created to bring together the thoughts and past times of my day. There are so many important ingredients that make up The Sketch Diaries, to name them all would be impossible.

Some of the sketches were created in one sitting in the evening while sipping a calming cup of chamomile. Others were created in pieces throughout the day while on break during my part-time gig at Starbucks or at times sitting in my car waiting for my shift to begin at Starbucks or just relaxing at home. You get the point. The one common factor for every sketch is it’s an accumulation of the day’s feelings, thoughts, emotions, experiences and moods. Each and every ingredient playing its role precisely.

I hope that you enjoy this personal look into my everyday life and how I interpret the pieces that make it complete. I would love , so don’t hesitate to with your thoughts.

And so it begins…
